چکیده

We look at managerial and production wages in countries that di er in size and relative endowments. Production labor is assumed to be a variable input composed of tradable tasks, while managerial labor is a xed, non-tradable input. Task performance is subject to increasing returns to scale on the country level, as in Grossman & Rossi-Hansberg (2010). We rst analyze country size and relative endowment e ects on wages, ruling out task trade altogether, followed by numerical simulations highlighting the degree of freeness of task trade as an important further determinant of relative wages, both within and across countries, as well as determinants of international gaps in income per capita. Trade in Tasks and the Organization of Firms

We incorporate trade in tasks à la Grossman and Rossi-Hansberg (2008) into a small open economy version of the theory of firm organization of Marin and Verdier (2012) to examine how offshoring affects the way firms organize. We show that the offshoring of production tasks leads firms to reorganize with a more decentralized management, improving the competitiveness of the offshoring firms. We sh...

Import Competition from and Offshoring to Low-Income Countries: Implications for Employment and Wages at U.S. Domestic Manufacturers

Using confidential linked firm-level trade transactions and census data between 1997 and 2012, we provide new evidence on how American firms without foreign affiliates adjust employment and wages in response to import competition from low-income countries. We provide stylized facts on the input sourcing strategies of these domestic firms, with an emphasis on how their importing behavior differs...

Multinational Firms’ Dynamic Decisions on Offshoring and Clean Technology Adoptions∗

This paper develops a dynamic general equilibrium model to analyze firms’ joint decisions on production offshoring and clean technology adoptions when facing different labor productivities and environmental regulations between home country and offshoring host country. During their decision processes, both workers’ wages and emission levels of related countries are endogenously determined. Later...

Offshoring, unemployment, and wages: The role of labor market institutions

a r t i c l e i n f o It is shown that when wages are determined through collective bargaining, there is a non-monotonic relationship between the cost of offshoring and unemployment. Starting from a high cost of offshoring, a decrease in the cost of offshoring reduces unemployment first and then increases it. The non-monotonicity of unemployment in the cost of offshoring does not obtain if wage...

Trade and Wages: A Deeper Investigation

A new presentation of the specific factors model shows how labor fares under international trade by considering how the price elasticity of the nominal wage rate responds to the terms of trade as well as factor endowments. Gains to labor are decomposed into measurable terms of trade effects and production bias effects. If trade is caused by differences in technology, trade can harm the interest...
